Why it happens under pressure
Working in a second language adds a processing step that first-language speakers never pay for. In calm conditions the step is invisible. Under pressure it compounds: the unexpected question triggers a search, the search triggers a translation, and the room experiences three seconds of silence that reads as not knowing. The engineer knew. The room never found out.
Speed here is not about talking fast. It is about how quickly a usable first sentence arrives, because the first sentence buys the time for everything after it. That is trainable, and it is the dimension that moves fastest once it is measured.
