Why it happens under pressure
Rooms read confidence signals faster than content, and they read them the same way whatever the speaker’s first language is. Hedges, apologetic openers, rising intonation on statements and trailing endings all get decoded as doubt. A second-language speaker produces more of these under pressure, not because they doubt the answer, but because the delivery channel is carrying extra load.
The result is a systematic mispricing: the business files a strong engineer as junior. It happens quietly, meeting by meeting, and the engineer usually blames their English. The diagnostic exists to show them, with a score, that the content was never the problem.
